KSDE: Providing leadership and support for lifelong learning.
Who are we? A team of educators and professionals who believe in top quality education for all of Kansas.
The Kansas Health Foundation generously provided funding for the development of this website. We would like to thank them for their support, without which, this project and curriculum would not have been possible.
Physical Dimensions, Physical Focus and Physical Essentials curriculums changed the look of physical education in Kansas in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Under the direction of Bobbie Harris, Kathy Ermler and Joella Mehrhof, the curriculum was developed and hundreds of Kansas physical education teachers were trained. These efforts emphasized that how to teach was just as important as what to teach. Trainees received significant resources and a new attitude about teaching physical education. As the years passed, the bulky notebooks brimming with great information needed to be updated and revised.
The Kansas Health Foundation recognized the value of this resource and the need to modernize the format. KHF tasked the Kansas Department of Education to review, revise and update the curriculum. The end result was the creation of PE-Kansas. Through this process, KSDE reached out to experienced, engaged Kansas physical educators that provided the backbone of the work (see the listing below). The focus of PE-Kansas is to provide best practices for a modern physical education curriculum. PE-Kansas will be an ever-evolving resource that demonstrates quality physical education practices through the addition of new content. Physical educators are encouraged to submit activities that work for their classes and students to pe-kansas@ksde.org. This has been, and will continue to be, a team effort for Kansas kids and teachers to help create a fun and exciting PE curriculum!
